History: Sazh Katzroy – Final Fantasy Wiki

Personality: Human. If you had to pick a single word to define Sazh Katzroy, this would be the one.

Sazh is by no means a hero- He does not possess any exceptional skills or powers, especially when compared to his companions in misfortune. And while very efficient, his weapons of choice in the end are nothing more than mere guns. He doesn't have any dreams of greatness or fame, nor does he try to hide it when something scares him. When faced with dangers and impending death, he may be tempted to run away. And yet at the same time, Sazh displays some of the best qualities that can be found within a human being. He is kind, compassionate, forgiving, and loyal and in spite of what you could think upon seeing him for the first time, he is quite brave. He's probably a lot more courageous than your average person. Of course you wouldn't guess it at first, but it'll show in the most unexpected situations. A friendship with Sazh is a lasting one-- And he's more than a mere friend, he is someone you can rely on for anything. Nearly.

He is a mature and selfless man, with lots of humor to dispense and… As much if not more sarcasm to dispense as well. He's very skeptical about stories he's fed with and doesn't hesitate to word his doubts. If he's got something to say, he will say it and if he's got something to do, he will do it. Indeed, Sazh rarely hesitates to speak his mind. Lightning, Snow & co speaking about taking down the Sanctum (aka the government)? Wow, you guys are nuts, what the hell? Sazh won't hesitate to word how stupid the idea is, and admittedly: six persons on the run trying to take down the government is an incredibly stupid idea. Sazh is like someone from the real world who got pulled into a fantasy world and can't comprehend the universal rules that dictates protags will always win no matter how bad the odds are.

Thankfully, the old man knows better than to always open his big mouth and speak his mind carelessly. Sazh is a man who always tries to listen both his heart and mind before speaking or acting. And unfortunately, his heart wins the battle more often than not, much to his chagrin. As stupid as the ideas are, he's going to go along with them because heh, there aren't really any other options. That and these people just won't listen to common sense. Sazh will rarely say or do things that could hurt someone close to him, or anyone for that matter. And if he does say something that may hurt someone, it won't have been on purpose, such as when Sazh spoke harshly of the Pulse l'Cie to Vanille, without knowing she was actually the l'Cie who had caused Dajh to become a Cocoon l'Cie.

And that's where we can see that Sazh has a very big heart. He genuinely cares for those around him, even if they are strangers-- When he saw the PSICOM soldiers executing countless peoples during the purge; he was genuinely sad and wished he could help them. Or when he was told the world was about to end by the owner of the Casino in Serendipity, he immediately offered his help and even in face of a hopeless situation, he didn't give up. Of course, he cares even more when it is about his friends and family. He is ready to give his life to protect them; he'll put himself into dangerous situations without hesitating. He may be scared; he may voice his fears and attempt to protect his life. But he is no coward. If he has to die to protect those he cares about, well that's something he is ready to do. If he has to die to protect the world and its inhabitant, he will do it, just don't expect him to go quietly into the night or to act like a hero all along. He will quite simply be himself, a human with his pros and cons, with his fears and with his skills.

One thing worth mentioning is that Sazh's got a tender side for children. He is often seen trying to help them and make them smile even in the worse situations. In fact, one of Sazh's most defining traits is his love for a particular child, his son Dajh. Being a father, Sazh knows how to handle kids and can't bear seeing them sad. Not only that, but he is very protective of other fathers when they're being called out or when it's suggested they do not care for their children, just look at his reaction when Hope said his father didn't care. He know how they may feel, he knows a father cares even if he's bad at showing it. Dajh is literally his fuel, the driving force behind most of his actions, his reason for fighting and surviving. You just need to take a look at Sazh in Lightning Return to realize that Sazh really wouldn't be Sazh any more without his son.

If it was not for Dajh, Sazh may have lost the will to live after his wife's death. Trying to save Dajh from his fate as an l'Cie was the reason for him to join the Purge, and it is also why he subsequently followed Lightning. He was ready to defy a fal'Cie for his son; something that he definitely knew humans should never try. Something he knew was incredibly stupid. Later on, he was even considering giving himself in to the Sanctum, even if it meant being executed. Only so he could see and help his son one more time. When lost in a casino between life and death, Dajh was still the first person that came in his thoughts. In his eyes, nothing is more important than his son's safety and happiness. Sazh literally lives for him.

While Sazh's love for his son is his most defining trait, it is also one of his biggest defaults. When thinking to his son, Sazh tends to act irrationally and makes mistakes, very stupid ones at that. He didn't hesitate to go on the Purge Train for his son and confront a fal'Cie when it was deemed impossible for a mere human to defeat it. To be blunt, it was a stupid and hopeless move, even if in the end fate was on his side. He threatened Vanille with his pistols when Dajh turned into a crystal, and later even contemplated committing suicide, unable to bear the thought his son may be trapped in a crystal forever. Generally speaking, his affection for his friends is as much of strength as it is a weakness. He thinks to them before thinking about himself. He cares more for their well-being than for his own. When he wanted to surrender, he temporarily renounced it in order to help Vanille escape their pursuers.

He can overcome those defaults though. Vanille, he couldn't shoot her. Not only because he forgave her, but also because killing a kid is an unforgivable sin to him. That's just not right. And in the end, he couldn't even bring himself to hate her or have a grudge against her. He had every reason in the world to hate her, yet he managed to understand how she felt, managed to see beyond his sorrow to see she was a good person, a kid who hadn't ever wanted to harm his son. How could he hate? He just couldn't.

As demonstrated above, he is someone who can be very impulsive and will following his emotions without thinking about consequences, but this doesn't mean it is how it always happens. He's still the man who thinks taking on the government is madness when everyone else thinks it's pretty cool. When not acting on impulse, he'll listen to both his heart and reason. Sazh is actually quite smart and even before he became an l'Cie, he suspected the Sanctum was corrupted and was up to something. Yet most people in Cocoon never even suspected them. He is often the voice of reason in the group. When something is outright impossible or silly, he'll say it... Even though he'll end up following the group if they decide to do it anyway. After all, he cannot let those kids take all those risks by themselves. He is also a sort of Captain Obvious side-- Granted, being a captain obvious is generally a negative thing. But when you're surrounded by a bunch of Captain Oblivious, it's actually a pretty good thing.

Aside from that, Sazh appears most of the time as a lively, cheerful and happy man, trying to remain optimist and hopeful in most situations. If not for himself, for the sake of the others. On rare occasions, he may lose hope but this never lasts long, unless Dajh is involved. Either he tries to see the bright side of things; either he forces himself to be optimist. He's the oldest one in the group- He's got to be the one trying to inspire hope into others; he's the one who got to make them smile.

And in spite his happy demeanor; he has not forgotten his wife's death. His son and the adventures he lived with his new friends eased his soul and allowed him to slowly move on, but it still is a very sensible topic and a part of him remains empty. It is only thanks to his son and now his friends that Sazh remains a happy and lively man. And as time flows, the situation can only get better for him.

Lastly, he is pretty social and acts very friendly toward others peoples. He's not one to go and speak to people unless given a reason. He will go and speak with people if they need help and he can help, if they look sad and need someone to cheer them up or maybe because he is the one who does need help. And when he does, he will easily make friends and create lasting bonds with them.

Third-Person Sample: You had to be kidding him. The whole l'Cie thing? Yeah, okay. It hadn't been easy and it had been hardly believable, but they had gone through it and saved the world. In the end, all had been okay and they got their happy ending. The whole you're neither alive nor dead in a casino stuck between dimensions or something? That one had been weird, but okay, why not. Weird things happened, right? Gambling to find your son and winning your chance to leave was probably the weirdest and most nonsensical thing ever, but okay. He could accept weird things happened?

But, that? Waking up in another world, being told by a flying plushie that you were a hero and that you were expected to defeat some sort of calamity that ate worlds for breakfast? No way. There is a point in a man's life when enough is enough. And Sazh might just have reached this point.

"You've got to be kidding me." He shook his head and looked around. "I ain't buying it. I'm not in another world and-- Wait, what's with these clothes?" He looked down at his Chocobo Knight attire, suddenly realizing just what he was wearing. Okay, that was weird. But he snapped all of sudden. Oh, no no no. Something important, very important and he didn't see him anywhere.

"Dajh? DAJH?!" He looked around him, looking for the little boy desperately. No such luck, unfortunately.

Mognet Sample: Alright so how to write this...

"Hello all, the name's Sazh, I'm not a Hero of Light and neither are you. I know for a fact some of you will leap at the first opportunity to be called a hero and whatnot, but before ya do anything crazy, hear me out. That's not how things work. If anything, these guys expect us to do some crazy stuff for them, alright. So I think we should just, step back from the whole hero thing, think calmly and not do anything stupid, kay?"

How does that sound? Not great, huh. Why did it have to be kids? I mean, did ya see the average age of the Heroes here? It's crazy; of course they're gonna go headfirst into danger. Man, this ain't right.

Heh wait a minute kupo, what are you writing? That's not letter material right here, I'm only repeating-- Wait, you're writing what I'm saying right now too?! Wow, stop that. Hey, are you even listening? What, is this because I didn't get you that Kupo Nut? Did you even see the price of these things?

Wait wait wait, where are you going now? No no, don't go posting this! Not this way, not this way and stop writing now. Hey, come back here! Heey!!
